Climate Impact Partners

A self-service dashboard for the world’s biggest corporate carbon buyers

Climate Impact Partners is a leader in the voluntary carbon market, formed from the merger of ClimateCare and Natural Capital Partners. It provides carbon offsetting programmes to companies working towards net-zero and carbon neutrality targets. Its clients include Microsoft, Deloitte, American Express and Sky.

The problem

After the merger, with private equity backing and digital-first competitors gaining ground, Climate Impact Partners needed digital products that would retain and grow its enterprise clients while making its own service more efficient. Its clients trusted its expertise and valued the relationships, but their side of the service ran on email, PDFs and spreadsheets. They wanted more transparency, easier access to their own purchase and project data, and better ways to show their climate impact inside their own organisations.

What we did

In July 2022 we began an eight-week discovery to identify, prioritise and scope new digital products, interviewing strategic clients including Sky, LinkedIn, Informa, BCG, Co-op and S&P Global. We turned what we heard into concepts, tested them with clients, and delivered a prioritised plan for a client dashboard, with a build-versus-buy analysis and a financial investment case. That case won the backing to build.

From November 2022 we took the recommendation into development, working with a partner delivery company. Instead of choosing between a fully custom build and an off-the-shelf product, we built a custom aggregator application on Microsoft Azure, using single sign-on and industry-standard open-source tools, designed so new data sources could be plugged in as the company’s own data strategy matured. A working version of the Climate Impact Partners Dashboard was in clients’ hands within 100 days, giving them project information, purchase history and project assets in one place.

Through 2023 we scaled and optimised it, integrating the dashboard with the company’s internal data platform so purchases and projects appeared in real time rather than being uploaded by hand, and researching new features with clients and the leadership team: claims tracking, certification, reporting, and a view of available projects to buy from.

The result

The product was built with 25 of Climate Impact Partners’ biggest clients, drawing on more than 60 hours of interviews. By December 2023 the dashboard was live with 20 clients and rolling out to 83 strategic accounts responsible for 68% of the company’s revenue, and 11 of the company’s employees had been trained on it.

“We’ve tried to deliver this information over many years to clients. It’s very complicated, but what Made by Many have created is beautifully simple.”
