A bold transformation of The World’s Greatest Museum of Art and Design
The Victoria & Albert Museum is a global treasure-house of of art and design. It is the world's leading museum of art and design and houses a gigantic collection of 2.3 million objects, spanning 5,000 years of creativity. The V&A showcases extraordinary artefacts from around the globe and celebrates human ingenuity across cultures.
We partnered with The V&A to launch a programme of radical digital transformation that brought The V&A to life online and created a new digital experience, brand, and online platform. Our work with The V&A inspired new international audiences, improved access to collections, supported exhibitions, galleries and events, and delivered significant growth in visits and revenue.
A digital strategy to drive access and grow visitor numbers & revenue
We worked with The V&A to shape a digital strategy with three goals: widen access to the museum's resources, enable digital self-sufficiency, and create an online display architecture to mirror The V&A’s physical exhibitions.
Bringing the museum to life using the ‘object’ as the atomic unit of content
We developed a simple & robust object database, connecting objects with rich multimedia content, provenance, and related articles, events, and exhibitions.
Opening up the museum using an exciting digital brand and content strategy
The modern look and feel encapsulated where the V&A wanted to be. It put it on the map in a global context becoming a pioneer in cutting edge museum digital experiences.
As custom-built solution; new tools
The bespoke approach arose from the museum's past system struggles. By creating tailored digital tools, The V&A gained the means to craft a unique web presence and cultivate a culture of innovation and continual learning. The simplicity and user-friendliness of the new tools created an eight-fold increase in productivity and shifted the content team's focus from production to creative strategy.
Agile development collaboration
We also helped the organisation embed new ways of working, in-house software development and digital product management. We recruited, upskilled & mentored the museum’s digital team to become self-sufficient.
Deep and lasting impact
The immediate impact was a significant increase in visitor engagement and better conversion to ticket sales. Longer term, we delivered a sustained increase in online and physical visits and boosted revenue to drive a 4x ROI in under 24 months.
